When you were growing up in the little town of Hamlet, you always wanted to be a mighty Paladin. You ended up being a Fighter instead, because you didn't have the right prime requisites.

As luck would have it, as you were passing through the land of Prefectford, you stopped at the inn in the quiet hamlet of Frog, and heard the local seamstress talking about the ancient tomb that the town had (perhaps ill-advisedly) been built next to, and the fantastic Topaz Idol of Thornsacrum that was purported to be hidden there. Without bothering to ask why nobody had managed to recover it already, you set out on your very first quest.

Everything was going great until you had to actually go in the dungeon. That was when you fell in a swinging razor-sharp pendulum, got attacked by bullywugs, and got your thigh bitten off by a rust monster.

Fortunately, "giving up" isn't in your dictionary (probably because it's two words), so you persevered. You fought your way through countless skeletons and barbarians -- even a roper! But eventually you found the lair of the sinister Shadow Barbarian Gristleside, and were able to defeat him by knocking him into a antlion pit with a lucky critical hit. Bruised but successful, you made it back to the nearby city of Claremont and claimed your reward.
